Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Rutgers can trace its origins back to 1864, when the Rutgers Scientific School was founded with departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Graduate education in chemistry began on a very small scale sometime between 1910 and 1920, and the first Ph.D. was awarded in 1925.
