In the late 1970's, thieves were common, stealing anything that could be resold. Les began engraving names on hardhats and equipment to make them less attractive to the thieves. His fellow workers liked the unique style of engraving and started paying Les for custom artwork, wildlife and oilfield related scenes engraved onto the hardhats.
